Upcoming Feature: New PDF Reports

HemoSpat Logo

With the pending release of HemoSpat 2.0, I thought I’d cover some of the new features.

HemoSpat 1.x provides a basic text report as an exporter. This creates a text file with summary information about each of the patterns in the project.

The reason I left it as a text file is because every organization has different reporting requirements, so the intent was that the analyst would generate this file and then copy & paste the data they wanted into whatever tool they were using to write their report.

These reports look like this:

HemoSpat v1.13.0

  Organization: FORident Software
  File Number: 655321
         Date: 04 Jul 1954
     Location: 10050 Cielo Drive

      Analyst: Hattori Hanzo
    Assistant: Alexander de Large

  Coordinates: Right handed

All measurements are in centimetres and all angles are in degrees.
        Notes: Arrive at the scene

I have heard feedback from some users that having a nicely formatted report as a PDF would be useful, so HemoSpat 2.0 introduces two PDF reports. The goal is to provide standard reports which are useful for casework or reporting results for courses.

HemoSpat Summary Report

This report is similar to the Basic Report, but produces a nicely formatted PDF of the information. It includes a summary of each pattern (how many stains are used and which surfaces, information about the analysis, results, etc.) along with a table of information about each of the bloodstains (location, area, angles, etc.).

HemoSpat Full Report

This report includes an overall project summary, a section for each pattern, and a page outlining the bloodstain terminology used in the report.

The project summary includes:

  • incident information
  • how many stains are used and on which surfaces
  • the calculated area of origins
  • 2D top-down and front images of the scene

For each pattern, the following is included:

  • more detail about the stains and calculations
  • 2D top, front, and side images of the pattern
  • a table showing information about individual stains – location, area, angles, etc.
  • a page per stain showing:
    • the photo of the stain with the analyzed bloodstain circled
    • location (position and surface)
    • axes lengths
    • ellipse area
    • α and γ angles

I hope you find them useful and—as always—I look forward to hearing your feedback!
